December: OvidiuRo launched “Punguța cu 2 cărți”

Recently, OvidiuRo launched a pilot project that encourages parents with young children to read aloud with their toddlers – ever since they are born. „Punguța cu 2 cărți” (The 2-Books small bag) offers poor parents in disadvantaged communities a kit of two picture books to take home and read aloud with their babies. In order to make parents aware of the benefits of reading together, preschool teachers trained by OvidiuRo will organize in December reading sessions in their kindergartens, where both parents and children are invited to join.

By launching „Punguța cu 2 cărți”, OvidiuRo expands its literacy-based interventions in disadvantaged areas from 3 – 6-year-old children to very young children (0 – 3-year-old), aiming to raise the reading environment at home, for at-risk children – as research shows that the more words a baby is exposed to, the better prepared he is to start reading on his own eventually.

The project is supported by Kaufland Romania, and OvidiuRo’s objective is to expand the program in 2020 so that more and more poor families get quality picture books in their homes and start reading with their toddlers.
