2011 Citizen Award competition was open to Société Générale’s branches from 85 countries. Ovidiu Rom’s Fiecare Copil in Gradinita (“Every Child in Preschool”) project, submitted by the French bank BRD (Société Générale’s entity in Romania) to this contest, was shortlisted in the top 15.

Elisabet Grob, early education specialist from New York, came to Romania to work with the teachers from the 19 impoverished communities where Ovidiu Rom is implementing Fiecare Copil in Gradinita programs. The trainings are introducing modern methods of working with preschool children.

The Alex Fund was the beneficiary of an exciting theatrical production of Zalmoxis, directed by Romanian-American playwright Cristina Bejan at Georgetown University. This mystical play, written in 1921 by the famous Romanian philosopher and writer Lucian Blaga, is also a sharp political commentary, keenly relevant to contemporary life.

Mayors invited to apply for “Fiecare Copil in Gradinita” (Every Child in Preschool) funds

Thanks to Alex Fund donors, Ovidiu Rom and the Romanian Ministry of Education have invited all Romanian mayors to apply for grants to help them get every poor child in their community, age 3-6, into preschool and kindergarten. This is the second year of this initiative, in which parents qualify for 12 euros a month in food coupons if their children have perfect attendance. Last year 1,300 children in 19 communities participated.

Ballet, a dream come true for 20 children

130 children from Ferentari neighborhood in Bucharest are helped through Ovidiu Rom’s programs. 20 of them can see now how it’s like to be on stage, how it’s like to dare dreaming. Adela Vrînceanu, a volunteer who works with the children every week, teaches them the secrets of ballet.
