"Every Child in
School"

In poor areas where virtually everyone is impoverished, people’s options are severely limited, social supports are lacking, and the frequency of joblessness, domestic violence, substance abuse, child neglect, illiteracy, and wasted lives is high. In a civil society, it is the larger community’s obligation to ensure that all its children get nurturing, education, health care – and the opportunity to reach their full potential as adults. These guarantees are largely missing in many communities in Romania and the situation can only be remedied by a comprehensive strategy that engages the public, private and NGO sectors and addresses legislation, policies and public attitudes, in addition to carefully crafted, well-executed direct services.
One of the most severe effect of poverty is school abandonment. This is translated into multigenerational poverty.
The majority of children of Roma descent as well as a large number of children of all ethnic backgrounds who live in rural areas, do not get beyond the eighth grade. This is a problem of enormous proportion that has far-reaching economic and social consequences for Romania.
Over the past five years we have
developed a methodology that successfully gets impoverished children into school
and helps them to achieve and stay in school.

Our goal is to train teams from other municipalities to replicate our methodology. Fiecare Copil in Scoala (“Every Child in School”) is a 15-year plan to get every child in Romania on a track that will lead to high school graduation. We hope you will join us in the achieving this long-term goal!
